Thriller “Whisper by the Window” starring De Niro and Kit on Netflix: is it worth watching?
- Netflix has released the detective thriller "Whispers at the Window."
- Starring De Niro, Adam Scott, Michelle Monaghan; Keaton in a cameo.
- The film is based on a novel about serial killers and kidnapped children.
In early September 2024, the streaming giant Netflix added a new detective thriller 'Whisper at the Window' to its library. The film is directed by British director James Ashcroft and fully adapts the eponymous novel, which describes the investigations of a series of serious crimes related to child abduction.
Plot and main themes
The plot of the film revolves around two police officers trying to catch a serial killer who leaves behind only a whisper — a barely audible sound accompanying each crime. At the same time, a network of child abductions is uncovered, adding an extra emotional weight to the story and highlighting the relevance of the issue of protecting minors.
The main roles are played by American actor Adam Scott, known for the series 'Scrubs', and Robert De Niro, a legend of world cinema, who has been actively participating in projects on streaming platforms in recent years. Michelle Monaghan, recognized for her role in 'Brave', plays the role of an experienced detective, while Michael Keaton makes a brief appearance, adding a touch of retrospective chic to the film.
The project has become part of Netflix's strategy to expand its catalog of original detective and crime series, responding to the growing demand from viewers for tense, real or plausible storylines. Ashcroft, previously known for films like 'Blood Trail' and 'Dark Streets', brought a distinctive visual style to 'Whisper at the Window' — dark tones, dynamic cinematography, and a focus on the psychological aspects of the characters.
Film critic Pavel Voronkov noted that the film successfully combines traditional detective narrative with modern thriller elements. According to him, De Niro's performance remains an 'unstoppable' factor, and Michael Keaton's presence in the episode serves as a kind of 'Easter egg' for viewers familiar with his early roles. Voronkov also emphasized that the script maintains a balance between plot twists and character development, avoiding falling into clichéd tropes.
For an audience accustomed to long series, 'Whispers from the Window' is a compact yet rich four-hour film that allows for a quick immersion into the atmosphere of investigation without the need for long waits for new episodes. The themes of child abduction and serial killings remain sharp in the context of global security issues, making the film relevant and resonant with a wide range of viewers.
The final verdict remains with each viewer, however, considering the high-class cast, well-thought-out script, and professional direction, 'Whispers from the Window' could become a worthy addition to the list of must-watch detective thrillers on Netflix.
