Firefox today is the only notable browser that is not built on Google's engine. Chrome, Edge, Opera, Yandex Browser — all are based on Chromium; Firefox has its own Gecko, and this determines whether web standards will be a matter of negotiation rather than the decision of a single company. It grew out of the Mozilla project in the early 2000s and at one time broke the monopoly of Internet Explorer, bringing tabs and extensions to users. Privacy here is not marketing: tracker blocking is enabled by default, there are containers that isolate sites from each other, and a truly strong extension system — on Android, you can install a full-fledged ad blocker, which Chrome does not allow. Sometimes this comes at a cost: rare sites designed 'for Chrome' behave strangely. Open source, free, all systems. Based on it, Tor Browser and LibreWolf are built.
