In brief
  • Blizzard announced Diablo V at BlizzCon 2026.
  • The game's release is scheduled for spring 2029.
  • The plot will take place hundreds of years after Diablo IV.
  • An animated series of Diablo for Netflix has also been announced.

During the online event BlizzCon 2026, Blizzard developers officially introduced a new game in the Diablo series – Diablo V. The announcement was made as part of the traditional segment dedicated to the company's future projects.

The release date of Diablo V has been announced for spring 2029, which means a three-year gap between the announcement and the release. This timeframe is considered standard for major gaming projects, allowing for development completion, testing, and preparation of the marketing campaign.

The plot of the new installment will unfold several centuries after the events of Diablo IV. According to the developers, during this time Sanctuary fell under the onslaught of hellish forces, which will open new opportunities for storytelling and gameplay mechanics.

In addition to the video game, Blizzard introduced an animated series based on the Diablo universe, which will be available on the Netflix platform. The premiere date, cast, and plot details have not yet been announced.

Diablo IV, released in 2023, continues to operate in a 'game-as-a-service' format, receiving regular updates, seasonal events, and expansions. Support for previous titles remains limited: Diablo III only receives automatic seasonal cycles, while Diablo II is officially frozen.

Historically, announcements in the series have occurred several years before release. Diablo III was announced in 2008 and released in 2012, while Diablo IV was announced in 2019 and released in 2023. The current announcement of Diablo V follows this tradition, although some players express concern that the announcement was made too early.

The community's reaction has been mixed. Some players welcomed the opportunity to continue the storyline and expand the franchise into new media, while others expressed doubts about how well Blizzard would be able to support old projects, given the frequent changes in mechanics and balancing in Diablo IV.

Nevertheless, the announcement of the fifth installment and the series highlights Blizzard's strategy to strengthen the Diablo brand as a multi-platform product, combining video games and cinematic content. Further details are expected to emerge in the coming months, and fans will be able to assess how the new chapter fits into the already established mythology of the series.
