Toto Wolff on the 2021 season: accepted the results, like Lewis Hamilton

- The year 2021 ended with a controversial decision in Abu Dhabi
- Lewis Hamilton lost the title to Max Verstappen
- Toto Wolff stated that he accepted the results
- Hamilton also confirmed his humility
The 2021 season in Formula 1 is remembered as one of the most intense and controversial in the history of the championship. Two leaders – British seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton and Dutch rookie Max Verstappen – were neck and neck almost until the last race, and the final decision in Abu Dhabi sparked heated discussions.
Battle of the Titans
Mercedes-AMG Petronas, which had dominated in previous seasons, faced a serious challenge in 2021. Hamilton, who had won seven championships, found himself in a fierce battle with Verstappen, who led the championship for most of the season but fell behind in some races due to technical issues.
The climax was the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where after 58 laps, leader Verstappen found himself in the 'front' position only after a series of crashes and the deployment of a safety period. The decisions made by the race management, in particular, the limitation on the number of remaining laps and the intervention in the restart order, became the subject of disputes and subsequent protests.
After the race, Verstappen received his first championship title, while Mercedes, despite a strong start to the season, ended up without a title. The team filed official complaints to the FIA, but they were rejected, and the race rules were subsequently revised.
In an interview given after the season ended, Toto Wolff noted that 'we accepted the results' and emphasized that 'all participants, including Lewis, also came to acceptance.' According to him, the team will focus on preparing for 2022, where new technical regulations are expected.
Hamilton himself, responding to questions, confirmed that he 'accepted what happened' and expressed his readiness to work on improving the car to return to the title fight. His statement was perceived as an attempt to close an emotional chapter and focus on future challenges.
The events of 2021 led to a number of changes in race management: the FIA introduced stricter protocols for the application of the safety period and revised the role of the race director. These measures are aimed at increasing transparency and predictability of decisions to avoid similar conflicts in the future.
Thus, both Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton officially expressed their humility regarding the results of the 2021 season, paving the way for a new stage of preparation for the upcoming championship.
