Austen wrote about what she knew: several families in the village, visits, balls, conversations over tea — and marriage as the only way for a woman to manage her fate. The stakes in this drawing room are therefore not at all trivial. Elizabeth Bennet is smart, not wealthy, and allows herself the luxury of having an opinion; Mr. Darcy is rich, arrogant, and makes the worst possible first impression. Then both of them long and painfully discover that they were wrong — she in her insight, he in his right to judge. Austen is a great satirist: her irony works through dialogue, no one in the text is declared a fool, they simply open their mouths. The 1813 novel set the template for romantic comedy, which continues to inspire books and films: two people dislike each other right up until the moment it turns out to be the opposite. Dialogues have not faded at all over two centuries.
