Six generations of the Buendía family, the town of Macondo, grown in the midst of swamps, and time that behaves here in an unusual way: names repeat, fates repeat, history goes in circles and still leads to something. Márquez tells of flying women and rain that pours for years, in the same even tone with which he describes the harvest and war — and this is the essence of magical realism: the miracle is not emphasized in italics, it is part of everyday life. Behind the fantasy lies a very concrete history of Latin America — civil wars without beginning or end, the banana company, foreign money, forgotten mass deaths. The 1967 novel made Latin American prose global and spread across dozens of imitations, none of which replicated the tone. Reading it is difficult and joyful: the family tree must be kept at hand, but the first sentence about ice is forever etched in memory.
