Long COVID and decreased monoamines

- Long COVID
- decrease in monoamines
- symptoms of long COVID
Canadian scientists conducted a study involving patients with long COVID and healthy individuals, including those who have already recovered from COVID.
The results of the study showed that patients with long COVID have a reduced concentration of vesicular monoamine transporter type 2 in the brain compared to healthy individuals.
Correlations were found between the decrease in this protein level and the severity of some symptoms, such as apathy, slowed motor activity, and deterioration of verbal memory.
The severity of apathy correlated with lower protein levels in the ventral part of the striatum, slowed motor activity in the dorsal part of the shell, and deterioration of verbal memory in the caudate nucleus.
The research results were published in the journal eBioMedicine.
