In brief
  • Lobramisal increased the rate of complete functional recovery after stroke
  • The drug was administered within 48 hours after the first symptoms
  • The third phase of the trials has been successfully completed
  • The results were published in the journal JAMA

An international team of scientists from China published in the prestigious scientific journal JAMA the results of a large clinical study of the third phase, dedicated to the use of the neuroprotector lobramisal in the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. The study focused on the effectiveness of intravenous administration of the drug in the first two days after the onset of the first symptoms of the disease.

Ischemic stroke remains one of the leading causes of disability and mortality worldwide. It occurs when a blood vessel supplying the brain is blocked, leading to oxygen deprivation of nerve tissue. The first hours after the onset of a stroke are critically important: it is during this time that the use of special drugs can prevent irreversible damage to brain tissue.

Loberamisal belongs to the class of neuroprotective agents — substances that protect nerve cells from damage due to lack of oxygen. The mechanism of action of such drugs is realized in several ways: they can improve blood flow, reduce the intensity of inflammatory processes, prevent the formation of free radicals, and stabilize the cell membranes of neurons.

According to the presented results, the use of loberamisal within 48 hours after the onset of a stroke significantly improved the indicators of complete functional recovery of patients. This means that a larger proportion of patients were able to return to normal activities without residual neurological complications. Such a result is of immense importance, as prolonged disability after a stroke often becomes a heavy burden for the patients themselves, their families, and the healthcare system.

The successful completion of the third phase of clinical trials means that the drug has demonstrated an acceptable safety profile and proven efficacy in a large sample of patients. This brings the possibility of its official approval by regulatory authorities and implementation in clinical practice closer. For patients who have suffered a stroke, the emergence of new neuroprotective agents can significantly improve the prognosis of the disease course and the quality of life after recovery.

The publication of results in JAMA, one of the most authoritative medical journals in the world, indicates the high scientific significance of the conducted research. This helps attract the attention of the international medical community to the development of new approaches in the treatment of acute cerebrovascular disorders, which remains a relevant task worldwide.
