1995: before this, no feature film had been entirely drawn on a computer. Pixar, under the direction of John Lasseter, took a risk — and at the same time invented a form in which CG animation lives to this day. The plot is simple to the point of genius: toys come to life when people are not in the room, and cowboy Woody, who has been his owner's favorite for years, discovers a brand new space ranger in his place, who also doesn't realize that he is a toy. From this jealousy grows a buddy movie about two heroes forced to find their way home together. Plastic, wood, and fabric were much more convincingly rendered by computers in those years than skin and hair — and the studio turned this technical limitation into the perfect choice of material. The script, where adult jokes do not interfere with the children's story, became the standard of the genre for the next twenty years.
