The question 'what is the Matrix?' was asked from advertising posters, and it was honest advertising: the film is indeed built around one idea that turns everything the hero knew about his life upside down. A programmer living a double life as a hacker is offered the chance to learn the truth about the world — and the truth turns out to be uncomfortable. 'The Matrix' (1999) brought together what had been scattered on different shelves before it: Hong Kong fight scenes, cyberpunk, anime, simulation philosophy, and Christian messiah mythology. Technically, the film gifted cinema with 'bullet time' — a frozen frame around which the camera moves — a technique that was parodied the same year. But the film lives not by tricks: black cloaks, green code, and the choice between two pills became as much a part of the cultural lexicon as 'Star Wars' was for the previous generation.
